I've looked at enough books of bungalow interiors that I've started to wonder what this massive built-in in the northwest bedroom would look like with the paint stripped. Obviously, this isn't a project that I'll get to any time in the near future, but it could be marvelous. Of course, I'd have to do something to lighten up the rest of the room, because otherwise, it'd suck all the light out of the space.

I love those built-ins, wish I had something like that here. Even if you don't get to strip it for a while the paint looks great.
I stripped the paint off of one of our built-ins recently, and then ended up painting it all over again. The short answer is that it would look amazing. The long answer is that you will tear your hair out and go through therapy trying to get it there! Actually, though, that one doesn't look so bad---see if you have a "dip and strip" in town, which can strip the doors and drawers clean for you. That would just leave the woodwork, which is a lot more manageable with a silent paint stripper or nontoxic stripping agent like Soygel. The basic rule of thumb is that flat and even = easy(ish) to strip; grooved or ledges = painful.
I feel like it's one of those things that you'll always wish you had done (or drive yourself crazy wondering about). I hate regret, so I'm all for stripping and refinishing them.
