Now, with more paint!

view from landing

The following are some photos of the second floor hallway and part of the stairs, illustrating the lovely new paint. I'm so glad to finally have this project done. Mostly. There's still a bit of touch-up work to do - the little blue specks in the last photograph are bits of masking tape I left on the wall so I could see where I needed to touch up. The photographs were all taken by Audrey.

I haven't been able to figure out how to take apart the globe light fixture. The bulb hasn't burned out, but I know it will some day. I may finally have to contact the previous owner about that.

Someday, I'd like to get rid of the spikey plaster on the ceiling. It has never been painted, and comes off with relative ease. The little bit of green showing at the top is an area that I accidentially scrubbed off when I was scrubbing the walls of their wallpaper glue.

Is that wallpaper old?
Looking good!

Yes, the wallpaper is old. Early 1970s, I think, but that's just a guess. There are a couple of places where we need to glue it down at the edges, but other than that, it's holding up well.

I wonder if you spikey plaster is the same as the stuff I'm trying to cover up on my ceilings. I can't see from the photos. Mine seems rock hard, though.

I googled how to undo OR unscrew globe light and someone had posted (about a different globe light) turn the globe carefully and you will reach a place where it just drops out of the fixture. That one must be like lining up an aspirin cap :-)

If that doesn't work, I would call the previous owner now, not wait until he's disappeared off the planet when you really need to know :-)

Can't wait to see it in person.

The yellow paint really highlights that beautiful wood work in your house. A nice bright and sunny look. Looks very nice.

Looks great! That moulding is beautiful. You're so fortunate it survived.

While I like the look of wallpaper, I LOATHE it (almost as much as textured ceilings) for reasons such as you just experienced. The new paint looks, great!

Are your ceilings plaster, as in the original ceilings or the dated popcorn ceilings? Our house is about 100 yrs old and the previous owners had dropped the ceilings in a couple of rooms and added the popcorn ceilings. My husband has scraped one off, and it was pretty simple. You can buy the inexpensive scrapper at your local Home Depot. I was also wondering, what color is the stain on your woodwork? Thx

Ann, it's not quite popcorn, but rather just that texturey plaster that has been so popular to cover up cracks in the ceilings. It seems to be of a composition similar to joint compound.

As for the finish on the wood, that's a tough question. It appears to be a light walnut color, and the grain is consistent with that. However, in the places where there are scratches, gouges, etc., the wood is much lighter than one might expect for walnut. This leads me to suspect that the wood might be butternut, which is related and has similar grain, but is much lighter in color. Does that answer your question?
