After some work chipping away paint, I was able to remove the window and take it to my basement workshop to work on.

In the future, for the difficult windows, I'm definitely going to do a better job of cleaning the paint off the hinges before attempting to use PB Blaster to get them operational.

I'm also looking right now for appropriate, round-headed bolts set up for a slot screwdriver in a corrosion-resistant material. The hardware store I use has matching bolts, and ones that will fit, but don't match, in stainless (with ugly hex heads). Perhaps I'll check out my local marine supplier and see just how disgustingly expensive bronze hardware would be. The bushings for the hinges are bronze, and those seem to have held up quite well.Christopher Busta-Peckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15428701548572867797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6796029456208178476.post-72554664436353452972009-10-26T23:23:09.213-07:002009-10-26T23:23:09.213-07:00True that not all girls are wimps but this one is....True that not all girls are wimps but this one is.

Post again soon so we know you survived. Why S?https://www.blogger.com/profile/16430725193750271819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6796029456208178476.post-83039671437297137842009-10-25T05:26:37.892-07:002009-10-25T05:26:37.892-07:00Not all girls are wimps :-)Not all girls are wimps :-)Karen Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13306986336556283751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6796029456208178476.post-54335879136305253102009-10-24T13:48:55.075-07:002009-10-24T13:48:55.075-07:00Um....I am so glad I'm a girl.Um....I am so glad I'm a girl.Holyoke Homehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13565635012535449422noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6796029456208178476.post-61709950847722315862009-10-22T12:28:49.351-07:002009-10-22T12:28:49.351-07:00Get a bosun's chair, secure it inside and use ...Get a bosun's chair, secure it inside and use it to suspend yourself right outside the window. I used some PB-Blaster to loosen up the hardware, only to realize that there was no way that I could fit a screwdriver in there and be able to turn it.

In retrospect, I have to wonder if a screwdriver bit for my socket and ratchet set might do the trick.Christopher Busta-Peckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15428701548572867797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6796029456208178476.post-44166910664550808232009-10-22T11:28:59.478-07:002009-10-22T11:28:59.478-07:00I hate those high attic windows where ladders don&...I hate those high attic windows where ladders don't *quite* reach for one reason or another. I have some of my own, though not quite to the extreme as yours. Too bad the sashes themselves weren't easily removable so you could work on them in comfort on solid ground... I don't know which would make me more nervous--hanging out the window to do this or using a torch in the attic. Good luck!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
